Veneers are very thin restorations that are made of porcelain and bonded to the natural teeth. They are fabricated in a dental laboratory after proper modification of the tooth structure and an impression is taken by your dentist.
They are able to correct minor abnormalities to a tooth such as:
- Rotations, crowding or spaces between the teeth
- Chipped or stained teeth
- Alter the length, size or shape of the teeth
The shade of the veneers may be taken on site or you may be sent directly to the dental laboratory for a custom shading. During the fabrication process that take approximately 2 weeks, your dentist will fabricate in office acrylic provisional veneers. These will be temporarily cemented in place until insertion of the final veneers are ready.
Care must be taken when biting into foods from this point forward as the porcelain could chip. Overtime, they may need to be replaced due to wear and tear.
Composite fillings (also known as white fillings) are tooth-colored restorations. These are the best options for small areas that are an esthetic concern. An added benefit is that they bond directly to the tooth surface which results in less removal of the natural tooth structure to order to gain retention of the filling. Overtime, they do need to be replaced due to wear and tear.
If a previous filling needs to be replaced or if there is enough damage created from tooth decay, an onlay may be a better option for treatment than a filling or a crown.
These can be fabricated with porcelain to address esthetic concerns or a gold alloy if strength is needed. This can be the best way to conservatively maintain the structure of the walls of the tooth.
Onlays are fabricated in a dental laboratory from an impression taken by your dentist after the tooth has been prepared. You will be made a temporary restoration for approximately 2 weeks before the final onlay can be inserted
The whole team at Cowichan Valley Dental is amazing, and I have never trusted a dental office more. They are professional while still being fun, and my teeth have never looked better 🙂
