At Cowichan Valley Dental Centre, we’re always stressing the importance of a diligent home cleaning routine and regular checkups with your trusted dentist to promote long-term oral hygiene. However lately some of our patients have been asking about mouthwash. How beneficial is mouthwash? Do I need to brush if I use mouthwash? In this post, we hope to answer some of those questions in order to help you maximize the benefits of your home cleaning routine in Duncan.

How beneficial is mouthwash?

To be clear, mouthwash is not a replacement for brushing or flossing. Instead, it should be used as a supplement to your existing home care routine to promote good oral hygiene. When used in concert with regular brushing and flossing, mouthwash can help maintain the health of your mouth.

Is mouthwash mandatory?

Mouthwash is not mandatory. However, it can be a great tool for upgrading your current routine. After brushing for 2 minutes and flossing thoroughly, rinse with antibacterial mouthwash by following the directions on the back of the bottle. Your toothbrush will remove most of the plaque on your teeth, your floss will clean the areas your toothbrush can’t reach, and mouthwash will eliminate any remaining germs in your mouth.
